Jim Corbett (1875 1955) was born in Naini Tal and spent most of his life in the hills of Kumaon. He is considered a hero for keeping the forested area intact and tracking and killing maneating leopards. Jim Corbett of Kumaon, the first extended biography of the great man, was originally published in 1979 and remains an important and pioneering source book. It evokes Corbett s life and world with unrivalled knowledge and authenticity, perhaps because the author too belonged to the mountains of Kumaon and Garhwal so loved by Corbett. Jim Corbett of Kumaon has been a great favourite of Corbett fans for many years. This revised edition will be widely welcomed by a new generation of readers.

I would advise you not to get this one. The author is mostly quoting Col. Corbett's books. At least he comes out and admits it frankly. Buy the real Corbett instead.I also didn't appreciate the author's trying to get into Col. Corbett's head by speculating on why he never married and always lived with his sister Maggie. The guy is long dead and buried. He was a great hunter and did enormous service to India in his day, and very modest and self-effacing, to boot.. India's first National Park is named in his honor. Please respect him and let him rest in peace, for God's sake.

Jim Corbett of Kumaon DC Kala 9780143068136 Books Reviews
Well Done !
Interesting study of my childhood hero.
My husband found that this book answered many of his questions.
great book
I love to read about Jim Corbett! Excellent book! I got to visit his grave in Nyeri, Kenya, this past spring and I had this book with me. Great!
The biography admits in the first few pages that his work is incomplete but may make a good basis for a future writer to start a longer biography of teh legendary Jim Corbett. He is exactly right. This book answered the very basic questions of Corbett's biography but did not provide much more information than could be gleaned from reading his 6 books of fantastically written hunting tales.
For example we never find out in this book why he is known far and wide as "Carpet Sahib" although the book uses the term frequently. I'm still wondering....
It did contain new information for me about Corbett's life in Africa which I had not heard and which is not covered much even in "Tree Tops" which was his last book and took place there.
This short biography of Jim Corbett belongs on the shelf of every Corbett fan. D.C. Kala, an admitted admirer of Corbett, wrote this book in the 1970s. There is material here which fills some of the gaps left by Corbett's own writing. Topics include his family background, childhood, hunting, writing, work and military service, wildlife photography and his move to Kenya.
